SC Question

by anubhavgulati » Sun Oct 02, 2011 12:47 pm
Hi,

Jimmy, who ate sardiness from the officer's mess, became quite ill.

a. Jimmy, who ate sardiness from the officer's mess, became quite ill.
b. Jimmy, that ate sardiness from the officers mess, became quite ill.
c. Jimmy that ate sardiness from the officer's mess became quite ill.
d. Jimmy, who has eaten sardiness from the officers mess, became quite ill.
e. Jimmy who has eaten sardiness from the officer's mess became quite ill.

Can somone please explain what is the right answer and the reason why other choices are wrong.

My approach: Sentence is in past tense, so use ate instead of eaten. (D,E eliminate)
Left with A,B and C
B and C uses that which is wrong, A is correct answer.

I want to know the more difference in choices D and E:
D. Jimmy,who ...officers mess,became
E. Jimmy who ...officer's mess became

Can some one please explain above point.

In both choices D and E, it uses the present perfect tense. The verb became is in the simple past tense. So we shouldn't use the present prefect tense here as it suggests that the acting of eating sardines still continues in to the present. Also, in D, the punctuation is missing. Officer's mess is singular possessive noun

b. Jimmy, that ate sardiness from the officers mess, became quite ill.
c. Jimmy that ate sardiness from the officer's mess became quite ill.
d. Jimmy, who has eaten sardiness from the officers mess, became quite ill.---- has eaten is not in sync with became
