Ambiguous Gerundial clauses

Hey,

on the flashcards it says "Driving to holiday dinner, Fred's wallet was lost." is incorrect.

Thus far, I agree. But then it says: "While driving to holiday dinner, Fred's wallet was lost." is correct.

Why? I feel like this is still very ambiguous as it sounds like fred's wallet drove to the dinner!?

Your flashcards, unfortunately, are giving you faulty information. Both of those sentences are incorrect.

These are all correct sentences:

Driving to dinner, Fred lost his wallet.
While driving to dinner, Fred lost his wallet.
While he drove to dinner, Fred lost his wallet.
While Fred was driving to dinner, his wallet was lost.
