Here, the main confusion occurred because of "recent".

"extended sales slump" is a noun and requires adjective to modify.

Second part of the sentence is in simple past tense; So first past of the sentence should be in past perfect as it happened before that.

Possessive pronoun "its" refers to "seven-store retailer".

So, A is the Answer.
