Unemployed but applying to P/T programs

by gvgseg » Sat Sep 12, 2009 9:58 am
I was laid off back in March and am still looking for a job now 6 months later. I am also in the process of applying to schools but am a bit uncertain of how to proceed. Due to my financial situation, I am only able to attend part time and am limited to schools in Southern California.

UCLA FEMBA is my top choice. The priority deadline is 10/29, the regular deadline is 3/3. I feel that I am a borderline candidate and applying early would definitely help. However, I am uncertain if I should wait to see if I can get a job before I apply. Would this be helpful for my application?

I will apply to USC as well and am also considering UCI, Claremont, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.

Personal Info:

Top 40 undergrad university - East Coast private school
Overall GPA - 3.15
GPA last 2 years - 3.55
Earned 2 Bachelor's Degrees within 4 years
B.S. - Business & Economics - Marketing
B.A. - History
Minor - Political Science

GMAT - 700/6.0 - 48Q 38V

5 years experience for major financial services company - marketing strategy, direct marketing, analysis & reporting, customer relationship management

I have very little management experience, but do show good career progression.

My only extracurricular activity was with a program that trains kids to run in marathons.

Overall, your profile is pretty strong. A lot of people are out of work now so your unemployment is not a rare situation. Finding a job before applying is not necessary as long as you clearly demonstrate your career progression up to the point of unemployment.
