196. Camille Claudet worked continuously through the 1880's and early 1890's with the sculptor Auguste Rodin; since there are very few signed works of hers, the inescapable conclusion seems to be one of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin's enormous production of that period.
(A) inescapable conclusion seems to be one of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin's enormous production of that period
(B) conclusion of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin's enormous production of that period seems inescapable
(C) conclusion seems inescapable that part of Rodin's enormous production of that period was conceived and executed by Claudet
(D) conclusion of part of Rodin's enormous production of that period having been conceived and executed by Claudet seems inescapable
(E) seemingly inescapable conclusion is that Claudet would have conceived and executed part of Rodin's enormous production of that period

Please help me understand why C is the right choice.

aim-wsc, stacey please explain.

I will try to explain .

First of all lets focus on the meaning of the underlined part .

Since there are very few signed works of Camille Claudet - the author concludes that Claudet must have conceived the idea about the sculptor and executed some part of her plan in the enormous production process that lasted for 10 yrs 1880 - 1890 .

Now if you read answer options only C give you the clear and concise meaning of the sentence .

All the other options change the meaning .

Please correct me if I am wrong .

what i understand in order to keep the sentence parallel in past tense C has been choosen.

few signed works, was conceived and executed ithe correct version than conceiving and execution (A & B) or having been conceived and executed (D) or would have (E)

so C seems to be correct use of tense.

@rockeyb

Can you please explain why do you think option 'B' doesn't convey the same idea as option 'C'?

@pradeepkaushal9518

According to be,A & B are not using past tense. The only verb in the clause is 'seems', which is in present tense in all the options & rightly so. 'conceiving and executing' are the participle forms which are not verbs here.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sure mate ,

Lets look at B .

(B) conclusion of Claudet conceiving and executing part of Rodin’s enormous production of that period seems inescapable .

Now was the conclusion drawn by Claudet or author is drawing the conclusion ?

conceiving and executing - both are in continuous tense for an action that was completed in the past - should be better if we used Conceived and executed .

Hope this helps .
