Looking for expert guidance

by siddharth87 » Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:44 am
Hi Experts,

I'm looking for some guidance here to pick the target B-Schools. I appeared for GMAT on 20th Nov and ended up scoring 730(Q50 V39). Earlier, I wanted to apply to ISB R2 (deadline 30th Nov) so rushed into GMAT but now I think that I should have taken time and prepared well for Verbal. Anyways, nothing can be done about it now. Once I started filling the app for ISB, I realized that time wasn't enough for introspection needed to write those essays and to record the video on "For me life is...". Based on my research on internet till now, I think I would like to go for Consulting after MBA. But, because of the lack of guidance, I'm not able to decide which B-Schools should I target based on my profile. Since I am planning to apply next year, I can work on my profile and make it strong based on your recommendations. So it would be great if you can provide your valuable guidance on how to approach this part of the admissions process. Here's by brief profile:

GMAT - 730 (Q50 V39) --> second attempt, got nervous in first attempt and ended up scoring 620 (Q50 V24)
GPA - 9.7 (on a scale of 10) BTech in CS
Work Ex - s/w engineer (38 months in very well known Networking company) -->recently filed a patent but it's under review
ECs - Nothing significant, can work on it though

Thanks in advance.

Aha! But where is the question???
:)

Look, with a 730, don't even think about taking the GMAT again. What you need to do at this point is strengthen the other parts of your profile, notably the leadership, work advancement, volunteer work. also, now is a good time to start thinking about which schools you want to apply to, and to begin your research.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your valuable comments. After giving it some thought and doing some research on Internet, I've shortlisted a few courses. Following are the few Technology/IT Focused MBA courses I am interested in:
Sloan, Tepper, Stanford, Stern

However, I am also considering MS&Eng offered at Stanford and MIS offered at CMU Heinz. I know that I sound very confused but these courses offer a blend of Technical + Management subjects, which I found interesting. Please let me know your thoughts on the same.

Thanks,
Siddharth

You don't sound too confused. And you also wouldn't be the first person to be applying to more than one type of program (I totally understand that you are interested in a few options and want to explore them all).

I think that your list is actually a pretty good starting point. you might add Haas and Anderson to your list as I think either would fit your goals. If you are going to apply to multiple programs, the important thing is to apply at the same time so that you can make an informed decision with all the results in hand.

Best of luck!
