Questions about applying through The Consortium...

Hi all,

I am just getting into the craziness of picking schools to apply to and through my research have found out a bit about The Consortium. I read that you can still apply through The Consortium as long as you are an underrepresented minority.

I'm an Asian Female, and am wondering if I'm elibigle to apply? From what I've seen on posts and other resources, the Consortium mainly accepts African Americans, Hispanic, and Native American. Were I to apply through the Consortium, would that be beneficial?

From what I know (which isn't much) it doesn't seem like Asians are underrepresented in B-school, but I might be wrong?

My GPA is average, my GMAT is kinda low, but I feel that I have a very compelling story and the passion. I'm toying around with re-taking the GMAT, but as of now want to gauge my chances.

Can anyone provide some more insights/information or if anyone would be willing to chat over PM about their Consortium experience, I'd really appreciate it.

Well, the Consortium is really there for "underrepresented minorities", which they state on their mission, so just simply being "non-white" may not be good enough. Secondly, you might be able to try and represent yourself as an Asian minority if you are from a small country, but if you are from Chinese or Japanese origin for example, it will not really be likely to apply to you. Finally, keep in mind that whatever the case, another criteria is that you have a long history of dedication to social initiative, being a contributive member of your community and so forth.

"I read that you can still apply through The Consortium as long as you are an underrepresented minority." is an incorrect statement. It's a common misinterpretation. It's not FOR underrepresented minorities.

ANYONE can apply through the Consortium so long as he/she SUPPORTS THE MISSION of the Consortium. As a Consortium member and 1st year at Johnson at Cornell University, I can tell you that I have classmates who are not minorities who are Consortium members, some even received the Fellowship. I would take a look at the Consortium mission and ask yourself if you've shown that you support it. Be advised though that the 2nd consortium essay will ask you for how you support the mission and you'll need a LOR from someone speaking on your behalf on how you've supported the mission.

Big thank you to Money9111 for the clarification! I have worked with straight white males applying through the Consortium. They were great candidates because they had strong evidence of a commitment to increasing the representation of underrepresented minorities in management and management education. This is a very important distinction to make, and it's also important that people understand that the Consortium's eligibility is not something to try and squeeze oneself into but an opportunity for people who have clearly contributed to the Consortium's mission.

Miss Maus - I would worry less about the race/ethnicity part and more about the "advancing the mission" part.
