How to define undergraduate GPA?

by eric68508 » Sun Aug 16, 2009 2:08 am
I had graduated with a GPA 2.35 in my 1st Undergraduate degree.
Because my GPA is too low, I failed to admit into a master degree, but they allow me to study as undergraude student to take some prerequstie course to push up the GPA first. In this 2nd undergradue program,I have studied for 1 semster, and I get GPA 4.0. Then I was admitted in master degree.

And my question is : If I want to apply for MBA program now, what is my undergraude GPA?Can I average all the grade point in 2 degree?
Thank you.

Hi and thanks for the good question.

This is one of those cases where, as much as we would like to bump up that undergrad GPA, your smart play is to be totally honest about how when and where you earned each GPA.

The on-line application that you fill in may or may not have space for "other undergraduate study" or something like that so the logical place for this is the supplemental essay.

Two more thoughts:

- Not to put too fine a point on this but how you present this is an ethical issue. As you have probably figured out, MBA admissions are EXTREMELY competitive so there is a strong temptation to roll your post-graduation studies intto your GPA. Don't do it unless specifically instructed. This is the kind of small stuff that speaks volumes about your character. Be clear and err on the side of caution.

- You may be worried about your GPA and your chances of admission. As long as you did okay in your master's degree, your master's will count more though it will not negate the undergrad.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi Paxton,

If during my undergraduate studies I took some units during the summers at a local junior college, should I average those units and grades into my gpa? Or should I only report the gpa from my main institution?

Thanks in advance.
