Columbia EMBA - Letters of Recommendation

by redroom » Tue Aug 03, 2010 7:41 pm
I am applying to the Jan-term EMBA program at Columbia.

The school requests two recommender's, but the format is somewhat unusual. Instead of requesting a general letter of recommendation there is instead an online form which the recommender fills out. This form has several fields such as "What is your relationship to and how long have you known the applicant...", "Please compare the applicants performance to those of his/her peers", "How does the applicant accept criticism", "Please provide a short list of adjectives describing the applicant's strengths" etc. etc.

The available space is only 2000 characters for these questions. This leaves little room for story-telling, or relating an anecdote and instead means the recommender can only fill in a short, paraphrased blurb answering the question very directly and succinctly.

What should be my strategy be when instructing the recommender to fill these out? It seems there is very little room to be creative. I thought that the letters of recommendation are extremely important in positioning myself. I'm surprised that the school has left very little room to customize or personalize them.

There is an option to upload a traditional letter of recommendation but on the application itself it STRONGLY (in Bold) discourages this and encourages that recommender's use the form.

Thoughts on this? Are the EMBA recommendations simply not as important as the Full-Times?

Should I work closely with my recommender to craft 2000 character stories? Seems as if we would almost have to write poetry or a haiku to tell a story in such a small space!

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I can understand your frustration with the limitations around an online form for recommendations. This is actually quite typical for many US programs. I generally advise my clients to work closely with their recommenders regardless of the type of recommendation required (fill in the blank or letter). I suggest providing your recommender with a copy of your resume as well as your goals essay from your application. If this recommender is a current or former supervisor, it might make sense for you to refer to past performance reviews for examples to use in completing the form. While the recommendation should indeed be completed by the recommender, it is a good idea for you to get involved in the process to be sure the information she is sharing is supportive of your overall candidacy as well as the information you have shared in other parts of your application.

Regards,

Stacey

Hi,

I need to submit my recommendation to five business schools including NYU, Columbia and Wharton. Columbia and NYU seem to "insist" on only submitting online recommendations.

Both my recommenders are kind of doing me a favor and I do not want them to have to go 5 different locations and fill out the different forms over and over again.

I want to just submit a sealed letter from both of them in mail.

Will that make my application invalid?

What do I do?

Regards-
Sam

Well, I guess you don't want to hear this but: try and have them submit online. It takes time, and it can be a bit of a pain, but again the idea is that anyhow it should be written by someone who ideally likes you and would be interested in helping. And it's just time to "Call in those favors" by asking them to do it five times. If it's any comfort, everybody else has to do it too!
