B. except Smith and her
C. excepting Smith and she
D. but not she and Smith
E. outside of her and Smith

Look at it this way:
Every conservative candidate except she was defeated in the primary election.

or

Every conservative candidate except her was defeated in the primary election.

That helps??

except is an adjective thus we need an OBJECT behind Adjective
i meant Except + O

Why the use of "her", a possessive pronoun, correct here?

I did the same thing. Unfortunately I got 'Every conservative candidate except she was defeated in the primary election.'
