AOA: CoffeeCart

Hi, please rate my AWA AOA !
***************************************
The following appeared in a memorandum to the work-group supervisors of the GBS Company:
"The CoffeeCart beverage and food service located in the lobby of our main office building is not earning enough in
sales to cover its costs, and so the cart may discontinue operating at GBS. Given the low staff morale, as evidenced
by the increase in the number of employees leaving the company, the loss of this service could present a problem,
especially since the staff morale questionnaire showed widespread dissatisfaction with the snack machines.
Therefore, supervisors should remind the employees in their group to patronize the cart-after all, it was leased for
their convenience so that they would not have to walk over to the cafeteria on breaks."
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.

Staff morale is an important issue not to be taken lightly. In the preceding statment, GBS Company is dealing with this problem and fears it may worsen if their CoffeCart beverage and food service in the lobby of their building is forced to close due to unprofitability. The author of the memo claims that supervisors should encourage employees to patronize the cart because it was leased for their convenience. Though the claim may have some merit, the author presents a poorly reasoned argument, based on serveral questionable premises and assumptions. Based soley on the stated evidence, we cannot accept his argument as valid.

The primary issue with the authors reasoning lies in his unsubstantiated claim that the the loss of the CoffeeCart would further harm staff morale. A secondary issue is the notion that encouraging the employees to patronize the CoffeeCart will have a positive effect on the the business. The memo provides no information supporting the necessity and value of the CoffeCart, in fact, the only supporting evidence the author cites is a survey that showed dissatisfaction with the snack machines. No valid conclusion can be drawn from this evidence. This lack of evidentatry support regarding the CoffeCart and whether or not it is useful and valued by the employees renders this premise unacceptable.

In addition, the author makes an assumpation that remain unproven. He assumes that the staff morale is low because of the increase in the number of employees leaving the company. Employee turnover occours for many reasons, such as management changes and restructuring. This assumption lacks any supporting evidence and therefore we cannot assume that if the CoffeeCart were to close, employee morale would worsen.

That being said, the loss of the CoffeeCart could negatively affect morle, however the author needs to investigate the matter further. He first needs to establish if the current employees are satisfied with the coffe cart as is. Next he should determine whether or not the employee morale situation is in fact true.

In sum, the authors argument is based on unsupported premises and unsubstantiated assumptions that render his conclusion invaled. If the author hopes to persuade his audience that the CoffeeCart is worth saving, he ought restructure his argument, fix the flaws in his reasoning, and provide evidentary support. Without these changes, his poorly reasoned argument will likely do more harm than good.
