One question:

Can object of preposition be antecedent of a Pronoun?

Answer:

1. From Ron:
OBJECTS OF PREPOSITIONS are very rarely the antecedents of pronouns.

2. In the Manhattan GMAT sc guide, an example has been given:

Eva exercised daily with Jasmine so that she would stay in good shape.

==> Manhattan Guide says that "she" is ambiguous. I have a question here.

Since Jasmine is the object of preposition "with", SHE refers to Eva.

Am I missing something?

The rule for pronoun antecedent states that

IT MUST BE NOUN.
IT MUST BE ACTUALLY PRESENT IN THE SENTENCE
IT MUST MAKE SENSE
IT MUST AGREE IN NUMBER

other than that there is no rule!


The object of a preposition is ALWAYS a noun,so the object of preposition can be the antecedent.

As said in the explanation by MGMAT,she could refer to either EVA or Jasmine because both are logical antecedents

Please DO NOT FOLLOW ANY RULE UNLESS YOU HAVE VERIFIED IT

1) I usually confirm the rule with an expert or
2) from MGMAT SC strategy guide
3) Online Oxford dictionary. see my explanation of double vs twice.
4) Be cautious unless the rule has been stated with a working example by that person and why the other form is incorrect

Try reading the sentence substituting each of hte names for "she". Either way makes sense, but the meaning changes.
