The following appeared as part of an article in a magazine devoted to regional life:
“Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location. Even in the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial center of the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios
is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of innovative technologies.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
The above argument states that corporations should consider the city of Helios when planning to start a new business or to expand an existing business. The evidence provided to support the above conclusion is that the city’s unemployment rate is lower than the regional average, even in the recession period and also Helios is attempting to expand economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development. Moreover, the city has provided more jobs than its share of the region. In my opinion, this is a strong argument and the evidences provided clearly supports the conclusion. However, if some more information is provided about the Helios policies for the companies planning to initiate and expand business would made the argument even stronger.
Employment is a vital indicator of economic development. If there is low unemployment, it means that the city has more jobs and less people are unemployed and the rejoin is economically prosperous.
The location plays an important role in the initiation and expansion of a business. Whenever, someone plans to start a new business, he does a detailed analysis of the location where he wants to start the business operations and also look into the policies of the location in facilitating the new businesses, the demand of business operations in that area and also economic trend in that particular area. As it is mentioned in the above statement that Helios unemployment rate is lower it means that business are expanding in Helios and providing more job opportunities to the residents. That is a strong indication of the economic prosperity of the city.
Moreover, it is mentioned that Helios goal is to expand its economic base and is attracting companies that focus in research and innovative technologies, therefore Helios is an ideal place to start a new business, that focuses on research and innovative technologies.
In the final analysis, I would like to suggest that the above argument would have been even stronger, if the author provided information about how the city is responding to the new business.
