Demographic Question

by darcknyht » Mon Sep 15, 2008 10:39 am
Hi,

I have a question, especially for those most familiar with the admission's process.

I am an Indian male with a double major engineering degree. I was born in India; however, I moved with my family to the States at the age of three and have done all of my schooling here (minus studying abroad in college).

What are admissions people at schools going to group me in? The ever-challenging Indian/IT/Male category? Perhaps some Asian American category?

I am just trying to gauge who my competition is (if this is even a valid method of doing so).

Thanks for the input!

Usually schools ask you to identify your demographic group on your application; they will not assign you to a group. Though you are of Indian ethnicity, it sounds as if your background is unique from many applicants who have spent their entire lives in India and come to the U.S. as adults. This aspect of your profile should differentiate you if you can talk about unique experiences in your application.
