"Over 75% of households in Parksboro have Jacuzzi bathtubs. In addition, the average family income in Parksboro is 50% higher than the national average, and a local store reports record-high sales of the most costly brands of hair and body care products. With so much being spent on personal care, Parksboro will be a profitable location for a new Luxe Spa-a salon that offers premium services at prices that are above average."

The argument that Parksboro will be a profitable location for a new Luxe Spa is flawed and lacks relevant evidence. This critique will show that the basic support to determine profitability is not provided. Therefore, the argument is not persuasive.

The author contends that profitability is assured because of the amount of money currently being spent on hair and body care products and the high percentage of homes with jacuzzi bathtubs. However, these examples could mean simply that Parksboro residents enjoy pampering themselves at home. The author also states that the average family income is 50% higher than the national average. In order to earn high incomes, Parksboro residents may have more demanding jobs and therefore do not have time to go to the spa.

Also, the author does not provide evidence that directly addresses profitability. To be profitable, revenues must be greater than costs. What is the cost to rent or buy a business location in Parksboro? The cost may be prohibitively high. And competition may be so fierce that Luxe Spa would be forced to charge relatively low prices. Since that author does not provide evidence for either revenues or costs, the argument is not persuasive.
