Are MGMAT CAT scores correct?

by gmat-challenger » Mon Mar 21, 2011 7:41 am
I have made 2 GMAT Prep CATs and 2 MGMATs. On my first GMAT Prep I scored 710 and 9 mistakes on both sections. While on my 2nd MGMAT I scored 700 (pretty happy with the score) but i had many more mistakes on both sections. Still I scored similar to the GMAT Prep. I don't really understand it.

P.S. On the GMAT Prep quant section I solved all the questions (whether right or wrong) while on the MGMAT I had to guess on several (because I knew it would take me 4-5 mins to solve the question). Is the MGMAT quant harder than the real test? I really hope so cause all the problems seemed too long to read or solve :)

cheers

Hi there,

In my opinion, CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT, or another private company will always be a little inaccurate because they are not made by the actual test-makers. Furthermore, their scoring has always struck me as a bit mysterious. They do their best to approximate the exam, but I wouldn't really trust the scores as accurate. The real value of these practice CATs lies in stretching your stamina and pacing. Your GMAT Prep score is the most accurate.

I don't believe that the MGMAT Quant is "harder" than the actual test, and I actually recommend you think of your studies in a different way. If you intentionally seek out the hardest GMAT Quant material you can and learn to master it, you're likely to be well-prepared for the actual test. The tough thing about GMAT Quant is that since it adapts, the more questions you answer correctly, the harder the questions you see.

Keep reviewing your MGMAT test, then slowly take the remainder of the MGMAT CATs (I'd say one a week). The key is to review, review, review. :-)

Thank you very much for your response! I have the GMAT on in 2 weeks and from Monday I will be making 1 test per day. I have already passed all other guide books I have bought!

Still I feel less pressured in the GMATprep CATs than in the MGMAT. But I find the MGMAT CATs really helpful cause they uncover my weak spots and I know that if in the end I can finish them without any problem, then I will be ready for the real thing.
