Need advice

by mihika » Mon Jul 05, 2010 7:23 am
I plan to take the GMAT in Dec 2010.

Background:
Female, 28
Bachelor's- Environmental Engineering (GPA-4) from India
Stood first in class all four years
Was the student General Secretary in college. Organised and managed various cultural and social events.

Master's- Environmental Engineering (GPA-3.7) from US
Worked with Engineer's without Borders while working on my Master's
Working for an environmental consulting comapany. Currently working on a petroluem hydrocarbon clean up site in IL. The project is a high profile one (as it involves residents) and the highest billing project in my practice group. Am the second team lead ( have three people under me) managing day to day activities on site.

I want to change careers and plan to apply for a general management program in Fall 2010. I have not decided yet, but I may want to take some electives in green tech managment/sustanability. I do not have any finance background. I would be interested in schools in and outside the US. Which B-schools should I be looking at? What are my chances? What do I need to add to/enhance my profile to make myself a potential B-school candiate.

Hi,

Can you provide me a little more information? When did you graduate from undergrad and your masters program? Why are you taking your GMAT in December 2010 if you plan to apply this fall?

Thanks,

Stacey

Here's the information

Bachelor's - May 2005
Master's - Aug 2008

Sorry, I plan to apply Fall 2012 and take the GMAT this Dec (2010).

I have been working in environmental consulting since August 2008.

Thanks,
Mihika

Hi,

Thanks for the additional information. If you are interested in General Management programs, I encourage you to look at Tuck, Darden, Haas and Ross. These are all great programs in the US. As far as international programs go, you might want to take a look at INSEAD, Judge and IESE. When identifying and narrowing down programs it's important to look not only at the curriculum, but also at location, class size and job opportunities for graduates.

Keep up the interesting work experience and plan to get a 700 on the GMAT if possible.

Best,

Stacey

Thank you Stacey!

I hope I do get a 700+ too.

Just wanted your opinion on how my profile looks since I am from a non-finance background, infact I am not sure how many people from the environment field opt for the management route. Since I have two years in hand, what more do you think I should add to my portfolio?

Thanks,
Mihika

Hi,

You've got solid leadership and management experience combined with an interesting background. If I am reading your profile correctly, while your degree(s) are in engineering, the work you do is more along the lines of project and team management and not quite so focused on engineering. If this is indeed the case, you should focus your application and essays to emphasize this as it will help you differentiate yourself and stand out among other engineering applicants.

Best,

Hello Stacey!

Well I do both field/engineering work and am the second team lead. On the engineering side, I collect samples and do O&M work at this petroleum clean up site. On the management side I am in charge when my field supervisor is away. Though I am from an engineering background, my focus area is a little different. It is on the environmental side and not the conventional IT/Computer/Electrical field.

Thanks,
Mihika

Hi,

Great, it seems like you've got some diverse job functions. Be sure to point this out in your applications. Never assume the adcom will notice on their own.

Best,
