Home School Legal Defense

by er_priyankajolly » Sat Jul 24, 2010 6:43 am
The Home School Legal Defense Association commissioned a study on the effectiveness of home-schooling compared to public and private schools

A) Same
B) the effectiveness of home-schooling compared to that of public and private school education
C) the effectiveness of home schools compared to public and private schools
D) the effectiveness of home-schools compared to that of public and private schools
E) which was more effective, home schools or public or private schools

OA D

I could easily narrow down to B and D but i chose B. I believe that D is changing the intended meaning. Its the education which we need to compare. Please correct if i am wrong.

@Priyanka - I beleive Comparison could have been done in both ways:
1. Comparing Schools
2. Comparing education.

But, the original sentence logically doesnt say that education is being compared. It is extraneous information.

D looks more precise. Also, it avoids what is being comapred in the schools.

If B were to be right, I beleive, the sentence should have been
the effectiveness of home-schooling compared to that of public-schooling and private-schooling

Hope this helps!!

IMO -- D
Even i reached "B" and "D". I felt both were correct.
....but then the word "education" in "B" limits the scope of the comp0arison. Also "education" is no where in original.
