33. A group of sudents who have begun to clean up Frederick Law Olmstead's Morning Park in New York City believes that the park needs not to be redesigned but to be returned to its former condition

2)believe that the park needs to not be redesigned but to [ subject is singular- a group, verb required is singular]

3)believes that the park needs not to be redesigned but could [ Not X but Y where X and Y are to parallel. this is not the case here]

4)believe that the park needs not to be redesigned but to [SV error]

5)believe that the park needs not to be redesigned but that it [SV error]

at first glance I of course chose the wrong answer... but upon rereading the question i realized why it must be believes instead of believe ... Group is the noun... not students which is modifying group. ... then the idiom comes into play..

dumb mistake on my part... i have to watch that more closely! Thanks for the question though!

why in this one the first verb is plural (have) and second is singular(believes). how the sub is getting changed for bth the verbs in same s/c.....

if the OA is not given as (d), what is the SOURCE of this problem?
i noticed the "33" in front of the problem, so, in all likelihood, this problem has been taken from some random collection of problems floating around the internet. in general, the answer keys to such collections are VERY unreliable; there are wrong answers all over the place.

I havent posted OA for most of the sc questions cuz i m not sure if it the OA's are correct or not and i dont even have explanations to any of them.

ha, ok, that's understandable.

still, you may want to post them, with some sort of warning about the potential unreliability of the source. otherwise, you're going to have to depend on the moderators to come in here and point out what's right and what's wrong - and we all know that there aren't enough moderators to go around.

Isn't B violating parallelism.

What is wrong with D?

My pick is D.

From usage point of view >> I would prefer Need not to be to need to not be

1)believes that the park needs not to be redesigned but to - SV agreement failing - Students believe
2)believe that the park needs to not be redesigned but to - awkward usage need to not be
3)believes that the park needs not to be redesigned but could - SV agreement failing - Students believe
4)believe that the park needs not to be redesigned but to - perfect usage -SV - correct choice
5)believe that the park needs not to be redesigned but that it - usage of that it leads to ambiguity

My Pick is A

B, C and E has parellism issue for but and not

A use right singular form believes as compared to D which uses believe..

A group of students eliminate the middle man group is singular

IMO - D is the Correct choice. read the bold ones in below...hope this helps.

Here one can't eliminate the middleman OF. Here A group of students - denotes plural subject not the singular.
For example: Team, class, army can be treated as a single entity and must be singular. But the phrase A group of students can't be treated as a single entity otherwise should have followed by Who has begun in the main sentence itself.

The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

an astute poster has caught a mistake i made earlier in the thread.
i meant to say (d), but for some reason, i wrote (b).

(b) is actually quite ugly: not only does it break parallelism, but it also splits an infinitive in half. yuck.

Ron, I'd hate to challenge an expert, but as an MGMAT student I feel I have somewhat of an obligation to :)

Anyway, it seems to me that "who have begun to..." is clearly referring to/modifying "students," which is plural, whereas "believes" is referring to "group."
