Diesel engines burn as much as 30% less fuel than gasoline engines //of comparable size, as well as emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gasses that have been// implicated in global warming.

Hi - In most cases -- When we put a verb after as well as, we most often use the -ing form.

For example - Smoking is dangerous, as well as making you smell bad"

However, we must observe one exception when we use infinitive in the main clause: the verbal phrase is also in infinitive form to preserve parallelism.
example --
I have to finish my homework, plant the crop, as well as clean my house.

We have to see that the usage 'as well as emit' is simply wrong...

burn <as well as> emit is parallel to each other.
So eliminate A and E.

D does not talk about carbon dioxide. Hence eliminate D.

Between B and C.
fewer Vs less.
Fewer --> countable things. Less --> uncountable quantity.

Tough to choose between B and C.
I change my answer from B to C because,
number of gases (carbon dioxide and other gases) are countable so going with C.

After reading the question again, B looks promising.

emit shall be the parallel to burn.
amount of gas is less and number of gases is fewer.
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

'as well as emit' is wrong.you can't use 'as well as' with that type of verb form.

Adjectives modify nouns.
* Which?
* What kind of?
* How many?
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.
The most common question that adverbs answer is how.

'as well as emitting....' is an adverbial modifier modifying the phrase 'Diesel engines burn as much as 30% less fuel ...'
B) 'as well as emit ...' is an adjective modifier modifying the noun 'gasoline engines of comparable size'

@ original poster, are you sure that this problem is from the GMAT PREP software? if so, then it has not been transcribed faithfully ("gasses" is a british spelling that would never occur on an american test).

if it is indeed from gmat prep, do you have access to the original version?

in any case, "as well as" is a preposition. like other prepositions, it needs to be followed by a noun.
"emit" is not a noun, and so cannot follow a preposition.
"emitting" can be a noun form (gerund) and so is valid as the object of a preposition.
Ron has been teaching various standardized tests for 20 years.

I met this question when I redo the test on GMATPREP software.

Ron, I know that "as well as" is preposition. However, if it is preposition, it need a noun which is paralel to itself and in this question "as well as" can not be a prepostion. In this question " as well as" must be an adverb and that is why I want to discuss this question which is from gmatprep, THE OFFICIAL SOURCE OF HARD QUESTIONS.
