work/rate problem

by msquare » Tue Oct 07, 2008 5:21 pm
Can anyone help me with this problem?

Machines X and Y produce bottles at their constant rates. Machines X produces k bottles in 6 hours and machine Y produces k bottles in 2 hours. How many hours does it take machines X and Y, working simultaneously, to produce 12k bottles?

Thanks.

Productivity of X in hour: k/6
Productivity of Y in hour: k/2
Total productivity in hour: k/6 + k/2 = 2k/3

12k / ( 2k/3 ) = 12k * 3 / (2k) = 18 hours
