I am quite surprised by the answer that is mentioned- [E].
On the exam I would have gone with 'A' because the literary work of the author from one domain is compared to the literary work of author from other domain.

The answer should be "E" only.
Look at the modifying phrase at the beginning of the sentence. What its modifying
it should be "Adam Smith"
A leading figure in the scottish enlightenment --> can not be books.
This ruled out A, B, C
Between D and E, I think D is awkward.

"A leading figure in the scottish enlightenment" must be an appositive of Adam Smith and not Adam Smith's two books.

(D) and (E) remain.

"What x is to Y" is correct form.

(E) is CORRECT.
