Hi, I’m seeking advice on what I should do over the next couple of years to be competitive when applying to a top MBA program as college graduate. I’m currently community college student waiting for admission letters and I’m looking ahead at what I would like to do once I graduate from a four year university. In looking at the various graduate degrees, a MBA seems to fits my interests, strengths, and personality the best. Grades and GMAT scores are given, but I would like advice on everything else – I good starting point I suppose.
First, I was wondering if my work experience up to this point is at all relevant. I have almost five years of retail experience, with the later years being a key holder/supervisor. I was consistently top of my store in replacement guarantees, even recognized as a top 10 sales associate in the company. I was only laid off because the entire company went bankrupt. I also worked in club promotions for five years. I started off as a street promoter, but I worked my way up to become a partner in the company. I was instrumental in saving the company. I recruited almost all the key members of the stuff, found and nurtured the talent of our resident graphics designer, increased clientele, and much more. I only stepped down as a partner so I could better pursue my academic career. Currently, I’m working as a bank teller and as a sheriff’s cadet.
Secondly, aside from getting good grades, what should I do once I’m at a four year university? I don’t have any community service at this point in time, though I did host some small charity events. My work and school schedule doesn’t allow much free time for me to do community service. Should I work less so I can do more community service? Do I need to join clubs once transfer? A reputable business fraternity? I’m looking to finish all my upper division courses in three semesters and one summer, so would taking the GMAT this coming up fall be too early? Sorry for asking so many question, but I appreciate any comments or suggestions.
