Like X, Y:
=. X and Y must be NOUNs.
Correct patterns are:
like X, Y does something.
Like X, Y did something.

Analysis:
A. the subject (primary suspect) and the verb (argued) are in remote place. On the other hand, "Y, like X did, argued..." Look, "like X did" is a tensed verb, which is the violation of the rule "like X, Y".
B. Subject and verb are in remote place, and "argued that he does" is NOT correct. Does should be DID.
C. Correct because the subject and verb are close enough, and it follows the "like X, Y".
D. It violates "like X, Y". X=verb tense, which should be NOUN.
E. It has many problems as have already been explained.

Answer: C
