With adjustments for inflation, the relative costs of welfare benefits has been dropping since 1973, resulting in the welfare progam now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than in 1973.

A. Same
B. resulting in the welfare progam now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement as
C. resulting in the welfare progam now costing about 3 billion real dollars less to implement than it did
D. and as a result, the welfare program now costs about resulting 3 billion real dollars less to implement than it did
E. and the welfare program now costs about 3 billion real dollars less as a result to implement than

My take.... C

A -- 'less to implement as in 1973', comparison missing


B -- would end as 'as in 1973'... nothing specific that points to the program in 1973


C -- no redundancy, comparison seen between the costs for the program now and in 1973


D -- redundant 'as a result','resulting'


E -- 'less as a result to' is awkward...

a verb is required after than... "IT DID "

replace IT with program will sound good

C and D are the only options in which 'than it did' is present, which is the correct comparison
'and as a result' is wrong as it logically does not follow thw earlier part of the sentence. resulting is a better choice
target score- anything above 700
preferably above 750

IMO C.

"Resulting" is qualifying the entire clause, "the relative costs...dropping since 1973." That shows cause and effect. A, B, and C are using "resulting." However, in A and B, the cost of welfare program is compared with 1973 - wrong comparison. Also, 'as' in B is wrong. In C, use of 'did' is correct as it shows past action. Additionally, 'It' in C is unambiguously referring to the cost of welfare programs.

Thanks all. I marked C too, but the OA is D. Source Kaplan.

Explaination :- This won't work. There is no real subject for the verb here.

If someone agrees with this option, can you please point out the concrete rule here.

IMO answer is C

If we look at D,
D. and as a result, the welfare program now costs about resulting 3 billion real dollars less to implement than it did
result and resulting are definitely redundant.

Personally I don't think Kaplan is a good source for practice. I found another arguably wrong OA on Kaplan's math review book. Please see my posting:

I would also go for C.
I feel there is an error in question might typo.
the relative costs of welfare benefits has been dropping should be
the relative costs of welfare benefits have been dropping
