OG10 Q229

by manu.pant » Tue Aug 23, 2011 10:13 am
The colorization of black-and-white films by computers is defended by those who own the film rights, for the
process can mean increased revenues for them; many others in the film industry, however, contend that the
technique degrades major works of art, which they liken to putting lipstick on a Greek statue.
(A) which they liken to putting lipstick on a Greek statue
(B) which they liken to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it
(C) which they liken to lipstick put on a Greek statue
(D) likening it to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it
(E) likening it to putting lipstick on a Greek statue

Ans: E

Ans: E
A,B and C is wrong because of which refering to the closest noun i.e art and not to the technique

D is wrong because it changes the intended meaning of the sentence. If you read the first part of the sentence carefully i.e colorization of black & white films then it means the colorization has been done on it by computers i.e by an external thing and if you see option D then it means greek statue has already got a lipstick put on it

The same error is resolved in option E i.e by the use of putting

(D) likening it to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it

which in A,B and C refer to works . Works cant be compared to the action of putting lipstick or the lipstick .

In D , you can equate a technique to a statue
E makes more sense
