Hi,

I'm planning on applying to B-School this year, R1 if possible and was hoping you could kindly review my profile. I'm targeting a top 10 or top 20 school and right now the 5 schools I'm striving for are HBS, HAAS, Kellogg (1st choice), UT, and Ross (This may change depending on next GMAT). Any advice or guidance will be greatly appreciated, but my most important question is relative to my profile what GMAT score do I need to compete effectively given that this year will be much tougher than usual.

GMAT - 460, and 620 (V41, Q34), AWA score of 6 both times. I'm taking the GMAT again one last time in August and have signed up for VERTIAS' two day Quant Focus course in hopes of improving overall score to 680+ Link below details my struggle with the GMAT.

Education - Graduated from a top California State University with B.S. in in Finance and Accounting (dual concentrations). GPA 3.7 Magna Cum Laude. A's in all of my Finance courses.

Work Experience (4 years) - Currently a Financial Analyst in the Investor Relations group of an energy company. Graduate of my company's rotational development program (2 years - 3 rotations in major divisions) and spent one year working in South America. 2 promotions in 4 years.

Recommendations - Should be able to get rec's from high level Executives as well as line mangers who know my work personally. No academic rec's.

Extracurricular -
  • Lead recruiter for my company for past two years. Manage relationship with University, present to various clubs and societies, and conduct on-campus interviews.

Officer (2 years) of employee network, which is similar to being an officer of a University club.

Speak 3 languages (2 fluently, one conversationally)

Since graduation have been frequent participant in walks/runs supporting various causes as well as a Junior Achievement instructor during one summer.
Other
  • First of family to graduate college in the US.

    Plan on visiting schools
Thank you very much!

D Terman

Dear D Terman,

I would say your GMAT needs to be over a 650 to be considered and over a 680 to be competitive for these schools. You do have strong work experience and a great GPA, so that will go a long way to balancing out your GMAT. As you know, the rest of your application needs to be stellar if your GMAT is below the average. Based on what you posted, I think you have the "materials", you just need to spend the time to build your outstanding application.

Best of luck,
Lisa
