“ Some people claim that the growth of mass media has stifled intellectual curiosity. Others, however, argue that the availability of so much information and entertainment has encouraged individuals to expand their intellect and creativity.”
I think that all the information and entertainment that are available today because of mass media have only encouraged people to expand their intellect and creativity. This could be supported with a popular saying “Ignorance is bliss”, which has been around forever. It would not have been possible for us to know about so many things in such a short time and in such a great detail if it wasn’t for the mass media. In my opinion, all the information we get on a daily basis via mass media makes us realize various possibilities in life, which, we would, otherwise, have thought as impossible. I think, all this information and the entertainment that comes with it expand our horizons. They also make us aware and understand how people on the other side of the world live their lives, what we can take from them and what they might need from us. All this information and entertainment make us aware of opportunities in every aspect of life, be it business or personal life or culture.
Some humans are creative by birth, where as, some are good at building on others’ original ideas. One man creates something and the other man builds on it, resulting in something totally different; the process is like a chain reaction, from which emerge newer technologies, research findings, and sometimes, a new way of life. The immense amount of information and entertainment that we get today via mass media have encouraged and enhanced both the above human tendencies.
A good example this would be the Rap music in the US. This type of music started becoming popular in the US in late nineties. The mass media broadcaste this music across the world; some musicians in India heard the music and fused it with the Indian classical music. This fusion resulted in a completely new kind of music that nobody would have even thought of 15 years ago. The result? Change in the face of Indian music industry!
However, all this information and entertainment can also negatively affect us and our intellectual curiosity. Many times, mass media give the information that we do not need to know. This has a negative affect on the society in terms of newer mental illnesses, increase in the number of psychotics, increase in the number of crimes, and many more. It is also understandable that some people might get dependent on the mass media to form an opinion on any new information that has been brought to them. They might develop a bias towards an issue based on view point expressed in the media they follow on a daily basis. In such cases, their intellectual curiosity might be completely stifled as they are not ‘thinking’ any more about any of the current affairs.
In conclusion, how much all this information and entertainment affect one’s curiosity will also depend on make up of his/her mind and his/her intellectual ability.
