Group #1: Analysis of Issue
The desire of corporations to maximize profits creates conflict with the general welfare of the nation at large.

=========================================
The extent to which the desire of corporations to maximize profits creates conflicts with the general welfare of the nation at large is a complex issue - involving a tug-of-war between the interest of the society and those of the corporations themselves. However, I tend to disagree that corporations desire to maximize profits creates conflicts with the society.

Businesses and corporations are an indespensible part of society and are key to its growth and sustainability. Corporations infact, provide several opportunities to the society. They provide investment opportunities, generate employment and satisfy the needs of the society for various goods and services. Corporations have come a long way and have evolved from providers of service and goods to assuming social responsibilities and higher degree of governance. Most corporations not only have accepted corporate social responsibility but also promote social welfare programs.

On the one end of the spectrum are countries like the former USSR, China etc that had promoted socialism at the cost of economic development, and on the other end of the spectrum are countries like US, UK that have promoted the free economy promoting large corporations. Socialist often curbed private organization insisting on equitable distribution of wealth thereby challenging the free market economy and there is enough historical evidence about the detrimental effects of curbing private organizations on their societies.

At the same time we cannot ignore the detrimental effects that organizations have on the society. In the name of higher profits for their shareholders, they often do not have effective pollution control mechanism thereby having detrimental consequences on the society. There are several instances when corporations do not have effective safety mechanism which has detrimental consequences for its employees.

With corporations increasingly coming under the public eye and being scrutinized by their various stake holders they have increasingly assumed higher standards of corporate social responsibility and better corporate governance thereby contributing to the society as a whole. We should not forget that corporations share a symbiotic relationship with the society and both can benefit from each other and co-exist.

Nice attempt. Just work on the conclusion a little and try to add 'real examples'(names) to support your arg.
