ESSAY QUESTION:
"Parents should not shoulder the full burden of their children's college tuition. If university students are required to pay for at least a portion of their education, they will take their studies more seriously and, ultimately, benefit more from their college experience."
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your viewpoint using reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
MY RESPONSE:
The issue presented here states that parents should not take the full burden of their children's college tuition and children should shoulder some responsibility in paying for their own education. I completely support the stand taken by the author, as responsibilities especially financial ones will make a person more independent and will also prevent a student from taking his studies for granted.
College education should not be looked upon as only attending classes and presenting research thesis on subjects. A student should make full use of the time he spends at college, and should learn to be independent and responsible for his education. Doing so, will not only ease the burden on his family, but also make them feel more accountable to their duties as a son/daughter and as a student.
Paying up at least part of the college fees, will make a student realize the true importance of the education he is receiving, and also help him stay focused. Working part time at any firm, will help imbibe a sense of responsibility and help in the overall development of the individual. We should also remember that one does not have to work at a local grocery or restaurant to supplant his income, a student can follow his passion and work towards innovating them as usable products/service. The world has seen examples of many student startups/ companies developed by students still in college such as Microsoft, Google and many other web based startups.
Though students should work part time to help their parents in paying up college fees, one must also take into account that college education involves rigorous and hectic regimen. Students should try to balance education and part time job. The student should always make their studies as their first priority and should not lose their focus and drive in achieving their dreams.
Thus, we can conclude that a student will stand to gain more from his college education if he/ she takes up more responsibilities such as paying up their college fees and easing the financial burden on his/ her family. Doing so will ultimately help in the overall development of the individual and also help him in his future professional and personal life.
