Many people feel that increase in juvenile crime can only be combated if businesses actively organize activities and events designed to prevent crime. Other people feel that the active involvement by the family is more important in reducing juvenile crime. The issue is a controversial one, but closer examination reveals that when businesses are more involved in preventing crime, the juvenile crime rates are lower.
Firstly, high juvenile crime rates are generally associated with poorer neighborhoods. In such neighborhoods, children are generally under the care of an already overworked child care provider while their parents work to make ends meet. Inadequate supervision, extreme poverty and falling into the wrong company often cause the children to turn to crime. If business were to establish adequate after school care for children in these areas, where they would be adequately supervised, a lot less children would turn to crime.
Secondly, areas that do not have adequate extra curricular activities for children often have higher juvenile crime rates. These children do not have adequate recourse to physical activities after school hours. With nothing to do and nobody to look after them, they turn to crime. If businesses were to contribute to building more basketball courts, football fields, swimming pools where children could channel their energies into fruitful endeavors, less children would steal and turn to drugs and we would be able to reduce the crime rate.
Lastly, an overworked police force is often unable to service poorer neighborhoods with higher crime rates. With no police monitoring them, more children turn to crime. This is a Catch-22 situation, and the only solution I see is to have businesses become more involved in the prevention of crime. If business were to establish neighborhood watches or just pay security firms to police the areas, we would have a lot less opportunity for juvenile crime.
In conclusion, while there are arguments for both side of the issue, juvenile crime can be reduced if businesses become more involved in crime prevention. When businesses are actively involved, there are a lot less opportunities for committing crime. Hence we would have a lower juvenile crime rate.
