Human nature dictates the every action no matter how selfless it appears is inspired by a selfish reason.
Many a times we read about the philanthropic activities of business or movie celebrities in the newspaper. The people like Bill Gates are well known for their so called selfless nature, which has helped the global community to a great extent. However origin of almost all the philanthropic activities lies in a selfish activity. The fact is that the world perceives these activities as Selfless, but they are actually not.
There is famous tale about Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, a great philosopher from India. Once he was walking on the street in the city and saw a puppy of dog drowning in the water. Iswarchandra was moved by seeing this and he ensured that the puppy was moved to the place. Observing this, his friend praised Iswarchandra about his selfless nature. However Iswarchandra said, I could not have slept in the night, if I had not tried to save the puppy. According to Iswarchandra, his emotions made him to save the puppy and the philosopher denied that he was a selfless person.
Indeed every action taken by a common human being is out of his interests. The interest could be either intellectual or emotional. In most of the cases such interests are emotional. The decision to help the poor people and decision to build the business empire can stem from different emotions of similar intensity. Thus decision of Mother Teresa to devote her life to help the poor in India definitely stemmed from her feeling of belongingness towards poor.
In the business world, many people showcase their philanthropic behavior through regular donations and adoptions. People like Bill Gates and Angelina Jolie are examples of such people. Such philanthropic activities help these people achieve emotional satisfaction or in some cases self actualization. Science has proved that doing philanthropic activities improves psychological or emotional state of human beings. Moreover emotional well being is closely connected to the physical well being. To a great extent, the emotional well being of a person dictates the cholesterol levels in the blood. Thus the people who are involved in philanthropic activities are actually helping themselves.
Thus the activities which are generally termed as Selfless activities are not self activities at all. Each action of human being is rooted in the emotional or intellectual need. Thus every action of human beings is inspired by a selfish reason.
