Contrary to popular myth, war heroes rarely earn their status by acting as if they themselves are invincible.

(A) if they themselves are invincible
(B) though they are invincible
(C) being invincible
(D) invincible
(E) if they were invincible


Help me to answer this question.....................

My preference is B, although I am not sure since you haven't indicated how much of the original sentence is to be replaced. If "as" is underlined, the answer would be D. "Themselves" is superfluous.
