General SC Pronoun Question

Is it not correct for a pronoun to be the subject of an independent clause if it is the first clause and the item it represents is in the following clause, see below...

They are going to the pool to swim, and the kids will forget to apply sunscreen.

You can't have they in there without it being a dependent clause right?

I know the sentence is terrible but I hope you get the idea.
