Though the term "information architect" may suggest arranging text boxes in corporate presentations and shareholder reports, they have come to apply to widely ranging work, from website design and layout, to instructional booklets and advertisements.

A: may suggest arranging text boxes in corporate presentations and shareholder reports, they have come to apply to widely ranging
B: may suggest arranging text boxes in corporate presentations and shareholder reports, it has come to apply to a wide range of
C: may suggest arranging text boxes in corporate presentations and shareholder reports, it has come to apply to widely ranging
D: may suggest arranging text boxes in corporate presentations and shareholder reports, they have come to apply to a wide range of
E: may suggest arranging text boxes in corporate presentations and shareholder reports, they are widely ranging

What is the difference between "widely ranging work" and "a wide range of work" in terms their use? It will decide what to choose B or C.

They refers to term "information architect" which is singular so A D and E are out

Between B and C. Your query is what is the difference between a wide range of work and widely ranging work

Widely is an adverb. Ranging is a verb (A company offering merchandise ranging from the everyday to the esoteric)

Work here is a noun.

This is a great SC Trick. Adjective modify nouns. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs.

Therefore, widely ranging cannot modify the noun WORK

Therefore, B is our answer.

Hi all!

IMO C

There is 3/2 split.
We can eliminate answers A. D and E because of subject-verb disagreement:
...the term "information architect"... they...

'ranging' is an adjective according to https://thesaurus.com
so 'widely ranging' modifies 'work'
another example:
"an intensely burning candle"

If you don't agree with my reasoning, post here. Thanks!

Hope it helps!
Best,
Maciek

You're right i made an error. But your answer choice is still wrong.

'wide' is an adjective in 'wide range', whereas 'widely' is an adverb in 'widely ranging'. 'range' means 'physical limits of activities' and 'ranging' means 'changing within the limits' and thus using widely ranging instead of a wide range of activities changes the intended meaning of the sentence.

A wide range of activities means... the work ranges from type A to Type B

widely ranging activities means .. the work fluctuates between type A and Type B. - This option is thus incorrect.

Example

'He works hard

she is hardly working'

You have to use the adjective range because ranging has another meaning and is thus wrong.

Did you make a typo by inserting an extra comma in "from website design and layout, to instructional booklets and advertisements."?

Therefore (B).
