Hi All,

We're told that a car salesman earns a base salary of $1,000 per month plus a commission of $200 for each car he sells. He earned $2,200 in February. We're asked for the number of cars he would have to sell in March in order to DOUBLE his February earnings. This question can be solved in a couple of different ways, including with some basic Algebra.

Since the salesman earns $200 for EACH car that he sells, we can set up an equation to solve for that number. To DOULBE his February earnings, he will have to make $4400....

$1000 + $200X = $4400
200X = 3400
X = 3400/200 = 34/2 = 17 cars

Final Answer: D

Let x = number of cars sold in 1 month
So, his pay = $1000 + ($200)(n)

If he earned $2,200 in February, how many cars does he have to sell in March in order to double his February earnings?
If we double $2,200, we get $4,400
We need: $1,000 + ($200)(n) = $4400
Subtract $1,000 from both sides to get 200n = 3400
So, n = 3400/200 = 17

Answer: D

Letting n = the number of cars he needs to sell in March, we can create the equation:

4400 = 1000 + n x 200

3400 = 200n

n = 17

Answer: D
