Profile Evaluation For MBA Fall 2012

by ROCKYBALBOA » Mon Jan 24, 2011 6:00 am
Hi Everyone,
I would be very happy if you can evaluate my profile.
I am yet to give GMAT. Please advice me on what GMAT score should I be targeting. I have already given GRE ( V510, Q790, AWA 3:0). Which schools should I be targeting.

At IIT
Currently : pursuing my Master in Human Resource Management from Indian Institute of technology Kharagpur (IIT Kgp)... Current Gpa is 8.96/10 ( top 5 in class). This program ends in May 2012. So should be good to go in Fall 2012.

Student Placement Coordinator for my program at IIT.
Vice captain of the cricket team of IIT.
Active member of sponsorship committee for the HR summit to be organized soon.
I visit a small village nearby IIT to teach poor kids.
All India 7th at case competition at XIMB
All India 8th at case competition at IIT kharagpur

At Infosys
Prior to this I was working with Infosys technologies Ltd. I worked here as a software engineer for 25 months.
Part of the infosys Cricket team.
Active member of Infosys' CSR activities

at Jaypee during Btech
Under graduate : Jaypee Institute of Information technology in Computer science ( Btech). I have 75% marks here.
Captain of the cricket team.

Thanks in Advance

Arun,

As you know, you are applying from a very crowded demographic: Indian males. Your great differentiator appears to be your focus on HR, so I would emphasize that in your applications and perhaps even in your goals. Going directly from your master's program to the MBA will be problematic, however. It might be better to get more work experience before pursuing the MBA. If you aspire to top 25 U.S. programs then I would recommend you target a 700 or better GMAT score. Your verbal score will be an issue.

Hope this helps,

Arun,

I'm not talking about your total work experience. I'm referring to jumping from one master's program to another. They will need to know why you need both master's degrees, i.e., what is the plan that motivates you to earn a master's in HR and than an MBA.

Hi Paul,

I understand your point. To answer this at the moment I will say :

I have a desire to study in US where education has a different meaning all together. The practical way in which things are taught encourages me to apply straight after my masters however, I do not mind taking an year or two of work ex after my Masters.

Secondly, an MBA would give me a broader platform in terms of knowledge. The Masters in HR is a stepping stone for me where I understand the concepts and gain a valuable things from it.

What do u suggest?

Thanks

Arun,

Well, that's a start but am not sure it's a strong enough explanation to convince the business schools, or at least the more competitive ones. Not to be a career counselor, but my suggestion would be that you work for at least a year before attempting a U.S. MBA unless you are not particular about where you earn the MBA. Certainly, there are many U.S. programs that would admit you now.

Good luck,

Now that helps. Thanks a lot. My target is top 25 B-schools.

Do I stand a chance in fall 2012 for any of the top 25 considering I hit 700 , my gpa remains as good as 9/10 in my masters, and a good blend of extra cos as I have mentioned above.

Thanks

Hi,

It would be great if you can suggest about 10 schools(based on my above mentioned profile) I should be looking at for the fall 2012 application. I know it is early to ask but I want to start my research as I have a bit of free time at the moment.

Thanks

Arun,

Assuming a 700, I think you could target schools like CMU Tepper, Washington Olin, Texas McCombs, Rochester, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Indiana, Georgetown, Emory, and Minnesota. These are all strong programs.

Good luck,

Arun,

You have a strong brand of IIT behind you which is, no doubt, going to help you. However, the reason you gave for doing MBA after your Masters in HR (to experience system in the uS), unfortunately, won't cut it with the MBA admissions committee. A critical part of your application pocess is going to answer Why MBA and Why now, especially just after another Masters. Logical question that will come to the mind of everyone who will read your application is going to be - If you wanted to do MBA, why Masters in HR or vice-versa!

arunpanda,

Your low GPA may put you out of the running at most top ten schools, though your military experience would set you apart (with leadership built in). Because of the GPA you would need to aim for a GMAT as far above 720 as you can get.
