Look at the information given.

- All films considered for inclusion in the Barbizon festival are either drama or comedy.

- Drama ALWAYS has a lower acceptance rate than comedy.

- All films are either foreign or domestic.

- Overall acceptance rate of domestic films was higher than that of foreign films.

- Within each of the categories, drama and comedy, the acceptance rate was the same for domestic and foreign films.

(A) We are given information on only the rates of acceptance, not the numbers of films submitted or accepted.

(B) Domestic and foreign films were accepted at the same rates within categories, drama and comedy. Drama always gets accepted at a lower rate. So in order to have gotten accepted at a lower rate than did domestic films, the ratio of drama to comedy of foreign films must have been higher than the ratio of drama to comedy of domestic films.

Here's a numeric example.

Drama Acceptance Rate: 20%

Comedy Acceptance Rate: 40%

If foreign and domestic had both been 50:50 drama and comedy, they each would have had a 30% acceptance rate.

For foreign to get accepted at a lower rate, it has to have a higher proportion of drama, say 60:40 drama to comedy, versus 40:60 drama to comedy for domestic films.

With those ratios you would get the following acceptance rates for foreign and domestic.

Foreign - 60:40 - 28% acceptance rate

Domestic - 40:60 - 32% acceptance rate

(C) The acceptance rate for dramas is always lower.

(D) This is a trap answer. The information provided does not indicate what the ratios of drama to comedy were within foreign or domestic. It indicates only that the ratio of drama to comedy of foreign films was higher than the ratio of drama to comedy of domestic films.

(E) This is a trap answer similar to D.

The correct answer is B.
