A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were sold for $2.50 each. If none of the 36 remaining books were sold, what was the total amount received for the books that were sold?

A) $180
B) $135
C) $90
D) $60
E) $54

The OA is A.

36 is 1/3 of the total of books? Am I right?

Yep. If 36 is 1/3 of the total, then 2/3 of the total would be double 36, or 72. So we want 72* 2.50. Well, 72*2 is 144, so we know the answer is more than that. Has to be A

Hi Vincen,

The answer choices to this question are 'spread out' enough that you can use approximation to get to the correct answer. You are correct that 36 books represents 1/3 of the total books. If we 'round down' to 30, and 1/3 of the books = 30, then 2/3 = 60. At $2.50 each, 60 books would be $150. Since we know that were would actually be MORE than 60 books sold though, the total revenue would have to be GREATER than $150. There's only one answer that fits...

Final Answer: A

Hi Vincen,
Let's take a look at your question.

You are correct that 36 is actually 1/3 of the total books.
Let 'x' be the total books then we can write:
x (1/3) = 36
x= (3)(36) = 108

It means the collection of books contains a total of 108 books.

The question states that 2/3 of them were sold each of $2.50

Number of sold books = 108 x (2/3)
= 36 x 2 = 72 books

Now we can calculate the total amount received for the books that were sold.
= 72 x 2.50 = $180

Therefore, Option A is correct.

Since 2/3 of the books were sold, 1/3 of them were not, and that represents the 36 remaining books. We see that 72 books were sold (since 2/3 is twice 1/3, and 72 is twice 36).

Thus, 72 x 2.50 = $180 was made on the sale of those books.

Answer: A
