Female, 24, applying this year for next fall.
Definitely applying to Booth (visited last year, loved it), one other US university, ISB in India and about 3-4 more in Europe

Education
- 1st attempt GMAT - 640 Q44 V34
- 2nd attempt GMAT - 700 Q43 V41
- graduated NYU- BS in Media, Culture, Communication. Dean's list most semesters. 3.7 GPA. Graduated May, 2011 with honors cum laude
- Didn't take any business related classes really
- Took night classes at Baruch and NYU this year to compensate for that. Accounting - A+; Finance (grade pending, expecting an A), currently taking Statistics - also confident will get an A
- President of South Asian Studies Program Initiative for 1 year. Was involved in the organization of the Global South Asia conference for 4 years.
- Part of the NYU debate team. Was asked to come in and TA the course but wasn't allowed since I was here on a visa
- Photographs were often part of Aftab - the NYU Muslim creative magazine

Work
- Started working June, 2011 as social media analyst at a social media agency called Converseon
- Currently working as a data analyst at Weber Shandwick (PR agency)
- Got promoted every year, most recently from senior analyst to supervisor
- At Converseon, I ran the volunteering initiative and organized volunteering trips
- At Weber, our team hosts a monthly data salon. A colleague and I lead the social outreach.

Global Exposure
- Was born in India, but grew up in Dubai and Turkey. Spent a semester abroad in Shanghai and a winter in London.
- Liaise with the Istanbul office whenever I go back to Turkey to visit

Extra Curricular
- This is where things get a little not so impressive. I'm someone who loves trying all different kinds of things so don't stick to one thing to really get super involved and so don't have leadership positions outside of work
- I volunteer at the Islamic Center at NYU every Ramandan
- I have always been extremely interested in dance, having tried all kinds from swing, tango, bachata, salsa and bharatnatyam. I settled on kathak and after trying to teach myself through videos finally joined a class earlier this year. Our first performance in next weekend
- Have been trying to establish a letter writing project for about a year now, but it hasn't taken off
- I write for a third culture kid magazine called Denizenmag.com. They are really light pieces and only about 3 have been published so far. Hoping to get some more published before applications
- This one is kinda silly - I started the instagram handle @NYunsolicited which collects pictures of advice written all over New York - which has all of 14 followers :). Another thing that never took off!
- Participate in National Geographic's Your Shot project

Concerns/Questions
- Have an indian passport and am concerned that 700 is not competitive enough, especially since my quant score did not improve. I don't think I can get a better GMAT score than that, so have to figure out how to convince them of my math abilities. Not sure if the As in Accounting, Stats and Finance are going to be enough since they are all beginner level courses. I use math every day at work and am confident in my own abilities - just suck at GMAT and not sure how to showcase that, especially given the strong quant backgrounds other indian candidates come with
- Would like to apply to European schools - concerned i might not be old enough or have enough experience since their averages are a bit higher
- Having trouble choosing which schools to choose. To be honest, the only reason I would like to study in Europe is to be closer to family who still lives in Turkey and also because I prefer the 1 year programs. I like the Oxford program, but not sure about which others.
- Concerned about getting a job in the European economy
- Concerned about having to deal with getting a work visa no matter where I end up going (are there any schools that are more international student recruiting friendly?)
- Looking to move into marketing strategy either in a company or in consulting. (Flirted with the idea of going into business analytics or business consulting but not sure)
- I really like the Booth program because the marketing program there is extremely based in analytics - they even have access to Neilson data which gets me super excited- concerned however that the emphasis on quant might be the reason they reject me - looking at my low quant scores on GMAT
- Any indication of my chances at top schools would be great. With my score, is targeting top 10 a waste, or do I kinda have a shot?
- I feel like I've put the grunt work in but note sure how to pull it all together now for a good application - ANY and ALL help much much appreciated.

Thanks!

Dear Nm1158,

There are some pretty interesting things going for you and a few question marks. Your questions are a bit nested so I wont go in the order you pose them. Here goes:
  1. With the kind of academic background you have and your performance, the GMAT may not be the main area of worry for you. In fact when it comes to comparison, you can easily have an upper hand compared to the normal Indian applicant pool because of your not so common profile. So make the most of it
  2. That said, the GMAT score does play a role in Consulting - not necessarily in marketing strategy. The challenge for the latter will be the fact that you are an international candidate - so tough to break into that space. If you however target a niche - say media consulting or some such, the profile could still sail through. This is why, digging deeper on the why MBA and why Now piece is very important for you. That will also help you pull together all the seemingly disparate threads you have. On the GMAT, if you havent tried it, do evaluate professional help in case there is energy left in you to make this factor a winner all the way.
  3. For reasons mentioned here, I would refrain from making gut-based school recommendations. Suffice it to say that with 4 years of experience (that's what I could gather) by the time you join, you should have a shot at some pretty good schools out there. At your age, I wouldnt be too hung up on the 1 yr programs though - aim wider
  4. The other factor to be aware of is job changes. Within a span of less than 3 years, you seem to have changed jobs. It'll be important to understand how soon you quit your first job and why.
  5. I dont think the ECs are an issue. But it'll be important to tie them all up - even the failed ones, as to how they've built your character and have taken you to newer experiences/learning.
Hope this takes you in the right direction

Cheers,

Hi there,

Thanks for posting and sorry it took me a few days to get to this! So let's get into this:

Academics

You're pretty solid here. Great school with a great GPA. It wasn't in the hardest major out there but it's a major you're interested in so that counts. I know you're worried about your GMAT but it starts with a 7 so that's a good first step. Your quant is definitely low but looking at the rest of your profile, I wouldn't question your ability to hold your own against numbers. So from that perspective, I'm not terribly concerned. The score, however, is carried by your verbal. That's not ideal - you'd want a bit more of a balanced score. Also, you're taking additional courses which you don't really even need to be doing. All in, you meet the criteria to pass the first set of filters and no one will question your quant horsepower. Especially given what you do for work!

Professional Experiences

You haven't really mentioned what you DO here but there are some things I like right away. Promotions, involvement, and thought leadership. However, I'd really like to get more information here. What do you do. Do you have leadership experience? What does being an analyst at this company entail? What kind of impact have you had?

Involvement

You have some interesting activities here but, unfortunately, they haven't really gained traction. You haven't been idle in your free time and that's important to note. However, your involvement from a scope and impact perspective is a bit underwhelming. It seems to be sporadic a bit and lacks a cohesive theme. There's a bit of a cultural commonality but only tangentially.

Goals & Schools

It seems you have a bit more soul searching to do in this arena. Getting into marketing strategy or analytics consulting makes sense but you'll need to really know what you want to do. And have it researched. Not just generically stated - dig in and figure out what it means and how you get where you're going. School wise, I think you should target the top 10 programs that MAKE SENSE. Kellogg & Booth make a lot of sense for you. Look into the Kilts center @ Booth if you haven't done so already. But if you're considering marketing strategy more broadly and are open to industry, then look into other schools too like Stern, Ross, UCLA, Emory, Johnson, McCombs, etc. School selection will come from goal rationalization.

Oh, also, you mentioned your Quant score for Booth - if you can demonstrate horsepower in your application, you'll be ok!

General Comments

I don't know if European programs are the right choice for you. First off, you're young so 1 year programs don't fit as well. Also, as you mentioned, employment is more difficult, and things like marketing strategy for most MNCs are still kept in the US. So the jobs are here as are the alumni.

I hope that helps - you have a bit more thought to put into what you want to do exactly but that's the hard part. After that, it's all about putting the puzzle together!

First of all, thank you both for taking the time out for thinking this through with me.
Some comments on your thoughts:

mcbMcK

I'm definitely leaning more and more towards marketing strategy - the thinking really being, what I do for work right now is look at the data we have, collect it, organize it, analyze it but I never get to really act upon it. Our team basically works as internal consultants where we are tasked with projects but as with most consultants don't necessarily see it come to fruition. I'd like to be on the other side of that, where I take the data and am actually able to do something with it. Does that answer better the why MBA question or still not so convincing? As for why now - I feel like I have gained the skills necessary in analytics - I have a working knowledge of social media metrics, website analytics, dashboarding, projections and some audience planning. Having developed those skills, I feel all that is missing to take it forward to strategy is a business background and I hope the MBA will take me there.

In terms of job changes - yes I did change jobs once in the last three years - the reason being I was first working in a niche social media agency, the agency was shrinking in size, they had gone through 2 waves of layoffs and shrunk from a 50 person team to a 20 person one. In the midst of this, I got the offer from my current company which is a much more renowned PR agency and which also gave me the chance to do more than just social media listening, delving into other types of analytics like owned channel reporting, audience planning, SEO/SEM etc.

Can I ask what you mean by your 'aim wider' comment - regarding 1 year programs - and how that relates to my age? I wasn't clear on what you meant.

CriticalSquareMBA

Sorry - I should have provided more details about my job. Most of my job can be sorted out into two parts - social listening and owned channels reporting. Social listening is when brands task us with researching what people are saying about them online, looking for opportunities for the brand to capitalize on: This can vary from product launches, campaign tracking, crisis management etc. We give recommendations on who they should target, how they should market their product or what types of campaigns brands should run, based on the data. The other part is owned channels reporting - this is basically tracking of brand health on all their different properties - their facebook account, twitter account, pinterest/instagram/youtube and all their websites. We try to see what content is working better, how much ROI are we getting for the amount we are spending on these channels and how much we can expect them to grow in the next year. Within this I have led teams of 3-8 analysts in implementing projects for big name clients - including managing direct contact with the client. I also, along with a co-worker and the EVP of our team, lead the social strategy and outreach for monthly events that we hold at our company. I recently got promoted from analyst to supervisor and will be gaining more responsibility in the coming months.

Involvement - I am hoping to tie some of the activities together through a string of community and arts - or do you think that's still too broad? My main focus would be on writing and photography - I've always felt publications targeted towards particular communities are extremely necessary - I joined the denizenmag since I felt there was a lack of community resources for third culture kids and I wanted to contribute in my own way. Similarly throughout college I contributed to the our Muslim arts magazine through my photography and am still active in the photography community by joining the National Geographic Your Shot site. The project I had started was along the same lines - it asked various people to write a letter describing a particular emotion which would then be posted anonymously. It was extremely interesting to see people write about the same word but interpret it in so many different ways. The point was to create a site that would show the universality of emotions, incite empathy and create a space where people could be personal without being judged.
but yes - if you are talking about leadership and impact - I guess I can't really spin it that way.

There was one activity but I'm not sure I can depend on it - thoughts? I was part of the NYU debate team in college. After college, my coach asked me to come back and be an assistant coach with him. This required us to travel quite a bit, so I couldn't keep up with it and my job. After I stopped coaching, he asked me to TA his class. I started teaching with him when administration put a stop to it, saying I can't have two jobs on one visa, hence had to stop that too. Since then, I haven't really been involved in debate - he has asked me to come judge tournaments once in a while, but since the past year, I haven't been involved at all. Is it too far in the past to depend on?

General Comments - sigh! I know the european programs don't make too much sense for me from an application standpoint, but I just have a personal affinity towards them - just being irrational!

You mentioned soul searching and some more thinking - what do you think are let's say 5 key questions I should be able to answer in terms of goals that would help me select my schools?

Again- thank you both sooooo much!

GMAT Score:740

Hello,

As already mentioned earlier, you should definitely not worry about your academic records. They are impressive and going to a top one like NYU raises the bar by itself. As for your GMAT,it is not bad at all, but yes for careers in consulting, it could get a little tough and that too if you have have narrowed down your options to Booth, ISB etc. it is suggested that you research and decide on a few more so as to have a wide range of choices, specifically with a score of 700

You will have a decent number of years behind you, so if you can capitalize on the scope given in the essays, you have a pretty decent chance of getting through the top Schools. For this, your essays need to have the punch that can deal the perfect blow~

Your ECs are decent and actually varied. You can talk about your failures and accomplishments and the " silly "one! They are rather interesting and can work wonders if put across in the right manner
