Is X between 0 and 1? Question from GMATPrep

by darwin » Tue Feb 07, 2012 6:30 pm
It is hard to search for this GMATPrep question in the forum since everything is in x 0 and 1..Pretty much most of the algebra questions have these words :)

Here is the question

Is x between 0 and 1?

1) X is between -1/2 and 3/2
2) 3/4 is 1/4 more than x.

Here is what I came up

We can eliminate 1) for sure.

So, for 2), I interpret it as

3/4 > 1/4 + x

=> 2/4 > x
=> 1/2 > x

Then we CANNOT determine if 0 <= x <= 1

Combining 1) and 2) still doesn't help

So, answer should be E)

How can we get to B) ?

The second sentence states 3/4 = 1/4+x. Therefore, x = 3/4 -1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2, which is between 0 and 1.

So, B is the answer

This is a yes and no question.
You should not waste time computing the exact value of x.

Consider this question:
the question asks whether x is between 0 and 1.
Satement 2 give some equation with some value added or subtracted to x.
From this we know we will get a definite value of x
Whether it lies in the range or not, you will get a definite yes or a definite no.

finish at that.
Solvable in 4 secs.
IMO: B

@neerajkumar1_1 my problem was with the actual interpretation, not so much with the calculation.

Thanks for the reply.
