SC- "More than" Vs "Greater Than"

by goelmohit2002 » Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:53 am
Hi All,

I found the following information about this confusing More than Vs Greater than

"MORE THAN is used for countable objects, whereas GREATER is used for uncountable objects such as numbers, density, etc"

From the following link:

https://www.beatthegmat.com/greater-than ... 37004.html

Experts kindly please tell is this correct infomation or there is something more to it ?

Can someone please tell which of the following are correct and why ?

1. I have more/greater apples than bananas [apples/bananas –count]
2. I have more/greater talent than fame [talent/fame –non count]

For e.g. in the below question, the answer is
"A"
. Due to non countable "numbers"

================================================
The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970’s.
A. extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than
B. extinction; its numbers are now five times more than
C. extinction, their numbers now fivefold what they were
D. extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had
E. extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

Thanks
Mohit
