weak in basics pls clear the doubt

by atulmangal » Thu Mar 10, 2011 6:29 pm
The football team, tired after four hours of practice and wanted to reach home
quickly, took a short cut.

A. tired after four hours of practice and wanted to reach home quickly, took a
short cut.

B. tired after four hours of practice and wanting to reach home quickly, took a
short cut.

C. tired after four hours of practice and because they wanted to reach home
quickly, took a short cut.

D. tired after four hours of practice and wanting to reach home quickly, will take
a short cut.

E. tiring after four hours of practice and wanting to reach home quickly, took a
short cut.

I know the OA is B and the reason is "tired" is not acting as a verb here and wanted is acting as verb
so in order to make them parallel gerund "wanting" is needed...my doubt is...as tired is not acting as
verb..as we need was tired or something...how do we know that wanted is acting as a verb????
my basics are weak so can anyone pls clear my doubt....

In the above sentence tired is NOT a verb but a participle.

tired and wanting are both participles and thus parallel.

Read the following

The football team,......wanted to reach...

wanted clearly implies action (the act of wanting) and so is a verb.

The sentence is

The football team, ......, took a short cut.

The portion between comma (participles) is being modified by the football team (the noun).

Participle I = tired
Participle II = wanting (gerund)

Thanks stormier, but one more thing, as we making participles parallel then wats wrong with option E,
tiring and wanting are both parallel????

Atul -

Grammatically the use of tiring is correct in option E. BUT, it would make no sense.

The football team cannot be tiring.

An exercise or a workout is tiring. A person (or a team in this case) gets tired of a tiring activity. And the sentence intends to say that the football team was tired and wanted to reach home quickly.

Hope it helps.
