Hello,

A GMAT score of 550 is just about average for all test-takers, and about 100 points lower than the average GMAT scores at the top 50 US MBA programs (see US News & World Report ranking and GMAT score listing), so with that score and only 1 year of work experience, it would be extremely difficult to get into a well-known program. Do some research on Business Week.com and US News to learn more about less competitive programs, and/or consider re-taking the GMAT and waiting to gain some more work experience before applying.

Hello,

Unfortunately the process is not so simple as that. Getting into business school is based on multiple factors, GMAT score being one of them (and definitely a very important one). The decision is also based upon your work experience/resume, references, application essays, undergrad transcripts, and interview. If some of those factors were not adequate, it would not matter what your GMAT score was. As for schools whose class average is around 550, it would be lower-tiered programs, and there could be hundreds of them when you include part-time programs and smaller/local MBA programs, but you want to decide what type of program you want to get into and whether it will be worth it for your career progression. For example, higher-ranked schools generally correlate with higher average starting salaries, as well as more international recognition.

goals?

by yvichman » Sat Jan 31, 2009 10:06 pm
Other than having the MBA degree you haven't specified any goals of what your planning on doing with that degree. It is impossible for anyone to give you guidance on what school will suit you if you don't be more specific. There are several reasons one may choose to pursue an MBA (more $, career change, want to open a business, etc.)

Programs vary widely in regards to all these aspects. First ask yourself what you want to do 10 years from now with your MBA and then the people on here can help you analyze your situation a bit better.

Also, include work experience, undergrad GPA as they are extremely important in the admission process. Different programs have different expectations of all these areas, and weigh them differently.
