let me try to crack it
problem with the sentence "fail to maintain good eating habits caused by the desire to be as thin as possible."
it would be strange habits those are caused by desire...wrong modification
B and c passive wordy
E i think crticial reasoning wise it changes meaning of sentence as it changes the scope.The sentence starts with bellet dancer and over generalize saying only young dancers.....
Another problem because they desire to be thin
Does eating habits desire to be thin?

So D Wins

>>>Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits caused by the desire to be as thin as possible.

(B) Good eating habits sometimes fail to be maintained by young female ballet dancers and gymnasts caused by desiring to be as thin as possible.
(C) Because they desire to be as thin as possible, good eating habits are sometimes not maintained by young female ballet dancers and gymnasts.
(D) Because they desire to be as thin as possible, young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits.
(E) Young female dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits because they desire to be as thin as possible.

>>>

Answer D is correct.

A, contains the misplaced modifier - sometimes fail, incorrect antecedent - good eating habits caused;
B, contains the incorrect reference to passive tense - habits ... fail;
C, contains the incorrect precedent 'they' - because they desire ..., good eating habits;
D, grammatically correct, style is OK;
E, contains incorrect antecedent 'they' and reference to habits.

The sure answer is D!

"because they desire to be as thin as possible" is an adverbial modifier. From modifier point of view, everything is fine.

The only difference between D and E is that the adverb clause is at the starting of the independent clause and at the end of the independent clause respectively. By putting the adverb clause in front of the independent clause, you are placing the pronoun "they" near to the first noun from the independent clause. In E, there are two nouns - compound noun ( dancers and gymnasts) and habits.

Again, this is a close call between D and E, but D is more strict and intact.

I think, in addition to that 'Young female ballet dancers' and 'Young female dancers' are two different things which change the meaning of whole setence.(scope of the claim)
earlier is subset of later.
so it is not that it is totally forbidden but i think unnecessary change of meaning is not recommended i guess.

and offcourse and that use of 'they' which is ambigious
thanks
