Paul's average bowling score for a series was 164 and Dave's was 158. If each of them bowled 4 games, how much greater was Paul's total score for the series than Dave's score?

(A) 6
(B) 12
(C) 18
(D) 24
(E) It cannot be determined from the information given.

The OA is D.

I need help to solve this PS question. Can any expert explain it, please? Thanks.

Hi LUANDATO,

There are a couple of different ways to handle the 'math' in this question (and some take a bit longer than others). The 'shortcut' here is that you can determine the difference in TOTAL scores by simply comparing the averages and then multiply by the number of games.

Since Paul's average score was 164 and Dave's average score was 158, Paul beat dave by an average of 6 points EACH game. Since they each bowled 4 games, the difference in TOTAL scores for each would be (6)(4) = 24 points.

Final Answer: D

Since sum = average x quantity, Paul's total score was 164 x 4 and Dave's total score was 158 x 4.

Thus, Paul's total score was 164 x 4 - 158 x 4 = 4(164 - 158) = 4 x 6 = 24 points greater than Dave's.

Answer: D
