A person started from A, went to east for x, south for y, west for z, north for m, arrived at B. What is the direct distance between A and B?

In east-west direction the person has covered an effective distance of |x - z| and in north-south direction |y - m|

Hence, the person has covered a total distance of |x - z| + |y - m|
