Strange question - the question tells us about 36 of the letters, and there are 40 letters in total. So there are 4 letters left, and they must be in the "dot and no line" category.

We can use the equation:

Total = Dot only + Line only + Both + Neither

40 = D + 24 + 12 + 0

40 = D + 36

4 = D
