I bought certain number of oranges at three for a dollar and five sixth of that number at four for a dollar. If I sold all my oranges at 16 for six dollars, I would make a profit of three and a half dollars. How many oranges did I buy?

Can someone help me do solve it?

Let the initial number of oranges be x.

Cost of x oranges = x.(1/3) = x/3
('three for a dollar' means that the price of one orange is 1/3)

Cost of 5/6th of x oranges = (5/6x)*(1/4) = 5x/24

Total Cost Price, CP = x/3 + 5x/24 = 13x/24

Total Selling Price, SP = ( x + 5x/6)*(6/16)
=(11x/6)*(3/8) = 11x/16

SP - CP = 11x/16 - 13x/24 = 7x/48 = 7/2 (Given)

x = 24
You bought 24 oranges.
