Acoma and Hopi

PLease help me with this question

Q1:
The Acoma and Hopi are probably the two oldest surviving Pueblo communities, both
dating back at least a thousand years.
A. both dating
B. both of which have dated
C. and each has dated
D. and each one dating
E. each one of which date

OA is A, but i am getting no hint about this

In future, can you please underline the part of the sentence which needs to be corrected?

B. both of which have dated
Wordy
C. and each has dated
Acoma and Hopi are , but this answer choice relates to the past i.e. dated

E. each one of which date
Wordy

A. both dating
D. and each one dating

Out of A and D, I would choose 'A' because it is clear and concise.

the right anwser should be A

B. "which" seems to incorrectly refer to "Pueblo communities"

C\D\E are imcorrect beacuse"each"or"which" could refert to"acoma and hopi"or"Pueblo communities"
English is soooooooo hard~I hate english....

Hey friends,

I am opening up this thread again. I am still not convinced why is the answer not D

A looks good. But, to me D is more clear.

There has been a lot of discussion on this question on the other forum, so I would appreciate if I can have a straight forward answer to my question.

when I solved this question, I eliminated C and D both because conjunction AND does not make sense here. That is why:

1. According to MGMAT, we need to put comma before AND in cases when AND separates two clauses. In our case, there is no two clauses (however I still don't know whether I should consider it or not... some sources argue that GMAT does not test punctuation)
2. If we consider the sentence logically, we would find that the part after comma is sort of modifier. It modifies the verb "are probably the two oldest surviving Pueblo communities". If it is not modifier, than with AND we should follow parallelism rule, which is not offered here.

maybe my logic is flawed.
if it is, let me know about it.

Agreed, the clause under consideration is a modifier, therefore "and" is not needed. Elimate C & D right off the bat.

A beats out D. More concise in my opinion.

Could someone please explain why usage of present perfect "have" wrong in option (B).

The only thing wrong with B is that there is no need at all to change the tense from simple present to present perfect, when keeping it to simple is possible and makes sense as is done by A.
Even "both of which date" looks OK, wordy though.

A past perfect tense in a modifier is ok when the preceding clause (main clause) already has an acceptable past tense verb.
In the present context, Acoma and Hopi are still currently surviving Pueblo communities.
Therefore, past perfect does not suit such construction.

it's a COMMA+V-ING problem
A. correct. both dating back at...the subjection is "The A and H", two communities. This part seems to give more information about these two communities.
B. which modifies communities，thus changing the meaning a little. the original sentence wants to tell us more info about A and H, not whole communities. Besides, "have dated" is still not a correct tense.
C:except for "concise", this answer still use " has dated" incorrect.
D:and each one dating...not parallel.
E:same problem as B, which modifies communities.Plus, each one...date? there should use "dates".
